My favourite computer video games of all time

Like most kids growing up in the western world, i spent a lot of time playing video games. Despite not turning out fat, i would sit around on my living room floor playing my atari, then sega master system, then nintendo 64, then playstation, then PS2, then wii and now my XBox360 for hours at a time. My friends would come over for sleepovers and we would spend the entire night eating cheezles and playing video games. It was the life!

With so many amazing games being released over the years, i decided to do my top 10 video games of all time!

Number 10: Pitfall

Pitfall was released by Activision for the good old Atari 2600, my first ever gaming console. It has incredibly primitive graphics but for its time was amazing. The game involved the play running through the jungle, jumping onto vines, avoiding alligators, and basically trying to stay alive. It sold over 4 million copies, making it one of the best selling games ever on Atari 2600.

Number 9: Wii Sports

While technically not a single computer game, I felt inclined to include the Wii sports package in my top 10 of all time. The Wii console has redefined how we play video games, and gives hope to all the fat kids out there who want to stay inside and be entertained. The Wii lets you play sports in a more realistic way than ever before. Swinging the console as you play your golf shot, pushing through a ball in ten pin bowling, and smashing an overhead shot in the Wii tennis game. The games are fun and lifelike, and the fact that you're not sitting on your couch the whole time means it's gotta be good for you!

Number 8: Alex Kidd In Miracle World

Although this may not be one of the favourites for most people, Alex Kidd will always have a special place in my heart. Probably because it was the built-in game i received with my Sega Master System 2 that my grandparents bought me for christmas one year. This resulted in more gameplay than any other stage of my life. Swimming, jumping, punching, ducking and weaving, this big eared hero had to rescue his princess, after encountering many levels of challenges from plenty of random things. A few years ago a friend had it at their beach house and i played it, and it was the slowest, most frustrating piece of shit i'd picked up in ages. But when it first came out, it was heaven!

Number 7: Street Fighter II

The original created a lot of excitement but the sequal created a historical video game. In an obvious attempt to curb street violence, the makers of this game decided to let people do all their violent assaults from the comfort of their own home. The game features you walking through the streets of a dodgy American city, beating up punks as you go. The favourite part of the game for most is undoubtedly the train scene, where you were surrounded by bullies on the subway and had to fight your way out of it. Sounds like a normal commute to work for me!

Number 6: Grand Theft Auto

Car games have always been a popular fixture in the computer game industry, but it wasn't until Grand Theft Auto that it really stepped up a level. Instead of just racing against other cars, GTA allowed you to solve crimes, steal cop cars, run over pedestrians, and shoot people. From the original spawned other classics such as GTA San Andreas, Liberty City Stories, and more.

Number 5: Super Mario World

In terms of playability, this Nintendo game has to be close to the best of all time. Featuring Mario (the most popular character in video game history, this game took you on a journey through clouds, mushrooms and weird man eating plants. Lots of action but also highly inoffensive. Unless you don't like Italians!

Number 4: Wolfenstein 3D

Wolfenstein, as the name suggests, was one of the first games to be played in 3D. It opened the door to first person shooting games, actually playing the games from your own eyes. On top of this groundbreaking development in the video game arena, it was also a kick ass game in terms of shooting the shit out of people! Every level had secret passages and the enemies that you encountered where many and varied.

Number 3: Pacman

One of the true original arcade games, Pacman is an all time classic! Its simple graphics and basic concept became a household sensation, and there was always something empowering about eating the cherries and getting your own back on those troublesome ghosts! Lady Pacman was hot, but not quite the same ;)

Number 2: Tetris

Yes it's just a few different shaped squares falling from the ground and you simply have to place them in a position where they fit best, but it is still in my opinion the catchiest computer game ever invented. I was 13 when this game was released and it was the sole reason I bought a gameboy. On a round the world family trip that lasted 6 weeks, i think i saw maybe 3 or 4 tourist sites, and played literally thousands of games of Tetris. Nintendo, i salute you for this amazing video game!

Number 1: NBA Jam

As a big basketball fan, this game was always going to be a favourite of mine. But despite the obvious bias towards a game in this niche, it was truly ahead of its time! Exciting graphics, fast game play, and some of the most amazing dunks you could ever expect to throw down!! And if you hit 3 shots in a row without the other team scoring, you would hear the announcer shot "He's on fire". I played this a few weeks ago on my friends console and it is still a classic!
